General Medical & Annual/Biannual Health Check & Vaccinations

It is vitally important for your pet’s health that they have regular checkups. This is normally done at the time of their annual vaccination booster. At this check the vet will examine your pet’s eyes, ears, nose and mouth, for any problems. The vet will also listen to the heart, and lungs. The abdomen will also be palpated checking for normal size and location of liver, spleen, kidneys, bladder, intestines and prostate. The lymphglands and skin are also checked for any problems. Finally the musculoskeletal system is checked for any problems with the joints, muscles or bones.

This allows problems to be picked up and treated early. The annual check is a good opportunity for you to discuss any concerns you may have about your pet’s health. The veterinarian can also let you know measures to help prevent your pet developing health problems.

Surgery and Aneasthesia

We offer a general surgical facility in which we perform anything from abscesses, soft tissue surgery, exploratory laporotomy, cystotomy, thoracic, reproductive and orthopaedic surgery.

Anaesthesia is undertaken using the latest technology and always with pain control being an integral component before during and after a procedure.

Radiology

We have an excellent radiographic suite of tools - a powerful mobile x-ray machine and we undertake all our own automated developing. As needed we also perform contrast studies.

Dental Care

Dental services include routine prophies and scaling through to complicated extractions.

Pathology

Generally we advise using a certified and quality controlled independent pathology laboratory but also utilise in house diagnostics as needed.

Pharmacy

In order to provide high quality service, the Mittagong Veterinary Hospital keeps many quality prescription medications on hand so that treatment can be begun without delay. All prescription medications require a consultation before they can be dispensed. For medications requiring continued treatment, such as thyroid conditions, 6 monthly check ups are required.

In order to minimise waiting times for clients it is recommended that you ring a day before collecting repeat scripts, as a veterinarian has to dispense them.

Many non prescription medications are also available at Mittagong Veterinary Hospital. These can be purchased over the counter for worming, flea and tick control, minor skin conditions and many others. As always you have the benefit of our trained staff to advise you on the selection and use of these products. So please do not hesitate to ask.

Intensive Care

Special care is required for seriously or critically ill animals. With our experience in intensive care we can provide the care your pets need to stabilise their condition. Common conditions include poisonings, snakebite, motor vehicle accidents, post surgery, abdominal catstrophies and so on.

We commonly use intravenous fluids and oxygen supplementation (either via a nasal oxygen tube, or in an "oxygen tent" cage).

Where appropriate we also refer cases to specialists so that the best possible care can be provided.
